Skewed Election Coverage
During Friday’s News Talk Online on Paltalk.com with guests Mary Walter from Fox News Talk and WACK News Director Rus Jeffrey there was mention by the latter of a study which showed that MSNBC’s news coverage is biased against John McCain.
The report by the Pew Research Center’s Project For Excellence In Journalism is linked HERE. It’s an important study, and helps us sort whether it’s a question of viewer bias clouding perception or reality.
The findings clearly are an indictment of MSNBC’s coverage. But, interestingly, they find no such political leanings by the cable network’s sister network NBC. In fact, the study finds that at NBC, ABC and CBS, reporting tends to be “more neutral.”
CNN, it found, was “somewhere in the middle of the cable spectrum” but “generally more negative (toward McCain) than the press overall.”
While many viewers find that unsurprising, equally expected were the findings with regard to Fox, which the Pew report concludes has been “more negative than the norm” toward Barack Obama.
Palin Gets A Major Foreign Policy Issue Right
Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin has been criticized by many, myself included, for her lack of foreign policy experience. But on one issue, she is showing an understanding and resolve that, if nothing else, should bring the Republican ticket votes.
On three occasions during her interview with ABC, Charles Gibson asked her whether she would support an Israeli strike on Iran. And on three occasions Palin said the United States should not second guess what Israel must do to secure itself as a nation.
Bravo.
This is not merely about Iran’s possible quest for nuclear weapons (we’ll know more about that on Monday when the IAEA issues its latest status report). It’s about U.S. interference in Israel’s security affairs in general.
It’s also a brilliant political move. Many Jews, even those who are otherwise left leaning, are concerned about Barack Obama’s changing stance toward Israel. First Obama said Jerusalem should be the undivided capital of Israel. Then when Palestinians complained, he took that back. It makes a lot of Jews nervous about whether Obama would really support Israel next time things hit the fan.
Palin The New Dick Cheney
Rattling sabres
If you want to be the next vice-president of the United States, maybe you need to emulate the current veep.
Not only do Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin find common ground in their love of hunting, but they also seem to be fellow sabre rattlers.
Wasn’t it Cheney who threatened to station U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf should Iran fail to ensure that it isn’t developing nuclear weapons?
Whatever happened to Teddy Roosevelt’s philosophy of walking softly and carrying a big stick? The Iranians presumably know that the U.S. packs firepower without having to be reminded by Cheney.
Now Palin is taking a page out of Cheney’s playbook, telling ABC’s Charles Gibson the United States must be ready to take on Russia if necessary over Georgia.
